It's unfortunate you were unable to get up and running with Openfiler. However, many others have found it relatively simple to configure. You do *not* have to hack any slapd configuration to get it working - that's inaccurate. And local authentication uses a local LDAP server - so claiming there's no local authentication does not paint the full picture. A lot of user contributed documentation exists in the community forums and a little patience from individuals without the requisite technical knowledge to get it up and running out of the box would go a long way.
