Projects / shellsupport

shellsupport supports (bourne) shell scripting. It is a command line C program that provides those features that are lacking when writing portable shell scripts, because they are not covered by other portable (Posix 1003.2) tools. Amoung them are conversion routines from many ASCII date representation formats to seconds since the epoch and vice versa, file padding and wiping, symlink target display, random numbers, and counting.

Release Notes: This version comes with its own implementation of strptime (to parse ASCII representation of time), derived from FreeBSD's implementation. This should finally enable Linux/glibc users to parse the output of date(1). Solaris users might find this useful as well. This will only work for the C locale; national representations of date/time are no longer supported. 2.0 also adds wiping of files (overwrite with zeros) and more date formats to parse and display.
