image2mpeg

image2mpeg is a tool to convert digital photos (or any other images) into MPEG video streams, with transitions between the images. The photo stream may be accompanied with music (or any other audio stream). The resulting slideshow may be prepared for VCD, SVCD, or DVD playback in stand-alone players, or the MPEG videos may be converted into FLV (Flash Videos). The type of transition can be selected for each image separately from a set of fade, slide, roll, etc.

      Release Notes: Building with ImageMagick (libMagick/libMagickCore) has been fixed. A problem with command line passing has been fixed. A problem with 16-bit RGB input images has been fixed.

        Release Notes: Support for NTSC (if ffmpeg is used as encoder) was fixed. On multi-processor machines, image2mpeg is now started multithreaded for much better performance. More exact geometry processing was implemented, which results in slightly smoother Ken Burns effects. Some minor code clean-ups were done.

          Release Notes: Support for a 16:9 aspect ratio (and support for any aspect ratio, if ffmpeg is used as the encoder). Smarter aspect correction support. Image scaling is now done using Gaussian Filter for better quality, and the Point Filter is used for low quality (in quick mode). The geometry processing (including Ken-Burns-Effect) is no longer disabled in quick mode, but input images are scaled down to speed things up. image2ppm is now directly piped into ffmpeg; with this optimization, ppmtoy4m is no longer needed. Some small memory leaks have been fixed, and there are some code improvements.

            I've been using this program for several years, and I still say that this program produces the best results compared to anything else out there, on any platform.

            Recently, after a system upgrade, image2mpeg, to my dismay, stopped working. So, again, I contacted the author, and after a couple of emails, he was able to solve the problem.

            If your image2mpeg suddenly stops working, it is a problem with the newer Imagemagick releases. The fix is simple. With an editor, open the image2mpeg script and look for the following line:
            THREADS=$( cat /proc/cpuinfo 2>/dev/null | grep -c ^processor )
            and change it to: THREADS=1
            I believe it is located at line 51

            Thank you again for your great service & for making this great piece of software!

            Excellent Program
            I was very happy with this program. I contacted the developer about adding more options about how to handle aspect ratios of the images and he implemented new functions right away.

            I used the program to make DVD formatted mpegs and the program did everything I wanted.

            The documentation could be more substantial. For example, it wasn't clear to me that you could write directly to a .mpg since the documentation suggests you write to a .ppm. Also, more information on working with index files would be helpful. I expect that as the project matures, the documentation will be improved and a user's forum or mailiing list will be made available.

            Works great + great service too!
            This program is truly excellent and works very well. It gives me the results that I am looking for and comes with many different effects. I highly recommend it.

            When I first tried out this program, it didn't work. So I contacted the author and he VERY promptly contacted me and we soon discovered that newer versions of FFMPEG work a little differently so the author showed me how to modify my image2mpeg script and then he released a new package the next day with the modifications built-in. The author gives better service than any software company out there.
