Since the dates in the package are from 1997, I doubt it.

Ext2 (and therefore ext3) has measures to manage fragmentation, so this utility probably isn't needed. I'm sure there are worst case senarios, but I doubt they affect many systems.

There are ways to tell if your fs is highly fragmented. The package has a utilitly called frag which would tell you the fragmentation level of a given file--assuming it still works. The stat command from Debugfs will give the block listings for a file, which will allow you to determine how badly fragmented your fs is. If they're all over the place, then maybe some sort of defrag utility will boost performance. Also, I believe the "non-contiguous" line in e2fsck will tell you how badly fragmented your filesystem is.

I read the docs...
It has some info on ext2 users, and says they should get a 10-15% performance increase and whatnot. Thus, I am assuming that the program should work anyway (although I had the same problem as you). However, he also had a comment about 1.1.x kernels at the bottom of the README - not a good sign, I'd say...

Defrag 0.7 doesn´t work with Kernel 2.2 ?!
This Tool doesn´t compile on Systems with Kernel 2.2!

Maybe because the Kernel doesn´t support the ExtFs any more!
