Projects / BEAM

BEAM is a toolbox and development platform for viewing, analysing, and processing of remote sensing raster data. Originally developed to facilitate the utilisation of image data from Envisat's optical instruments, BEAM now supports a growing number of other raster data formats such as GeoTIFF and NetCDF as well as data formats of other EO sensors such as MODIS, AVHRR, AVNIR, PRISM and CHRIS/Proba. Various data and algorithms are supported by dedicated extension plug-ins. It includes VISAT, an intuitive desktop application, a set of scientific tools running either from the command line or invoked by VISAT, and a rich Java API for the development of new remote sensing applications and BEAM extension plug-ins.

Release Notes: A number of major new features have been added. These include the Time Series Tool (which allows users to create, visualise, inspect, and analyse time series of EO data), the Temporal Percentile Operator (which allows users to perform multiple kinds of gap-filled, spatiotemporal percentile computations), a dedicated OPeNDAP client which provides an easy interface to arbitrary OPeNDAP servers, and NetCDF4 data exportation.

Release Notes: Enhancements include the ability to generate masks from plots, zooming into plot areas using the mouse wheel, inspecting and exporting plot data as tabulated data, extraction of satellite data from a transect or track and displaying it, synchronized pixel positions, extraction of satellite data at geographical points, regression line display and information, the ability to compare two raster datasets and display a density plot of pixel frequencies, histograms of raster data, generation of common statistical variables, and an option to compute statistics for one or multiple masks in one go. New readers have also been added.

Release Notes: VISAT now allows you to add, remove, change, select, and organise the visual layers displayed in a view. New visual layer types have been added. Thanks to GeoTools, VISAT can now also display ESRI shapefile overlays and images downloaded from Web Map Services (WMS). You can now store and restore your current VISAT session.
